Quiet Wins Archive: David vs. Goliath

From burning money on marketing to having Fortune 500 companies knock on their door.

In the world of B2B, sometimes the biggest transformations happen without fanfare. This is one of those stories.

The Results (12 Months Later)

We’ll give you dessert before dinner. Read how it happened below!

  • ROAS jumped over 10x from 0.35 to 3.91 (and still climbing)
  • Cost per lead plummeted from $1,500 to $160
  • Multiple Fortune 500 companies now in their pipeline (bigger deals)
  • Ad spend doubled in the last quarter (because it was actually working)
  • Website generating organic inquiries and phone calls

They're now confidently expanding their team because they know exactly where the growth is coming from.

The Starting Point

When we first met this team, they were spending $50k annually on digital marketing with painfully little to show for it.

The numbers were grim:

  • A return on ad spend of just 0.35 (losing money on every dollar spent)
  • Each new lead costing an eye-watering $1,500
  • A talented sales team starving for quality opportunities

They were competing against industry giants with massive marketing budgets, yet running a lean, efficient operation themselves.

Classic David vs. Goliath.

Classic Kiwis.

How We Did It

We rebuilt their marketing from the ground up:

  1. Stripped everything back - Before adding anything new, we stopped the bleeding by pausing ineffective campaigns, looking at what worked and what didn’t. It’s tempting to change everything all at once, but we gradually worked through priorities. At each phase,CPL fell from $1,500 → $1000 → $500 → $250 → $160
  2. Rebuilt their digital foundation - Rebuilt their website around solving specific customer problems rather than listing features. We demonstrated our ‘show AND tell’ approach to websites. We added clear, concise copywriting and engaging animations that showcase the system for those that don’t want to read.
  3. No more friction - We redesigned the entire customer journey from first click to sales conversation, removing friction at each step. We also developed professional video content that showcased their expertise, approach and what sets them apart.
  4. Deployed targeted firepower - Instead of broad campaigns, we built laser-focused ads on Google and LinkedIn that spoke directly to their ideal clients. Tweaking of landing pages, and building location-focused landing pages really started to turn the cogs.
  5. Armed the sales team - We identified the true reasons customers were "hiring" this company's solution (using jobs to be done theory) and created collateral that turned their expertise into easy-to-understand value propositions.

The Takeaway

Sometimes the most remarkable transformations aren't about flashy campaigns or viral content. They're about getting the fundamentals right:

  1. Stop wasting money where it's not working
  2. People are visual. People are lazy. Communicate your value quickly and clearly. While you’re at it, make it look good.
  3. Target precisely the people who want what you offer
  4. Arm your team with the tools to convert interest into business
  5. Iterate. Every time we optimised things and halved the CPL, profitability increased immensely.
